Lower School Curriculum Scope and Sequence

Highlights of our KINDERGARTEN Curriculum

In KINDERGARTEN, we review previous skills and learn…

·        Math: Counting and number value 1-100, single digit addition and subtraction, skip counting by 5’s and 10’s, math concepts (time, money, fractions, geometry, measurement)

·        English Reading: Reading short-vowel and some long-vowel words, improving reading strategies, comprehension skills, responding to literature

·        Hebrew Reading: Reading with Hebrew vowels, introduction to Hebrew language, receiving first Siddur (prayer-book)

·        Russian Language: Recognizing Russian alphabet, building vocabulary, reading simple words & short sentences

·        Writing Skills: Learning proper formation of letters and numbers, improving pencil control, writing sentences using “inventive” (sounding words out) spelling, begin journal writing, using proper spacing and punctuation in sentences

·        Social Skills: Turn taking, comforting our friends, using our words to express our needs and feelings to friends

·        School Skills: Participating in class lessons, following multi-step directions, cleaning up, sitting at a desk, paying attention for longer periods of time, interacting appropriately with peers, doing class work independently, completing homework assignments, listening to and accepting a teacher's instructions the first time, regulating behavior with self-control

·        Social Studies Units: “Our City” [teaches geography of Brooklyn and NYC], “Our Country” [teaches early US History], “Our World” [teaches countries and features of 7 continents],

·        Science Units: “Life Sciences” [teaches botany, zoology and biology], “Earth Sciences” [teaches weather, space, volcanoes], “Physical Sciences” [teaches states of matter, magnetism]

·        English Reading: Reviewing short-vowel words, reading long-vowel words, improving reading strategies, fluency and accuracy, comprehension skills, responding to literature

·        Hebrew Reading and Writing: Improving reading accuracy, learning Hebrew vocabulary, introduction to Hebrew script writing

·        Russian Language: Improving reading accuracy, building vocabulary, beginning writing

·        Writing Skills: Improving proper formation of letters and numbers, writing short stories, using and studying conventional spelling (for a weekly spelling quiz), using proper spacing and punctuation in sentences

·        Social Skills: Negotiating conflict, developing healthy friendships, using words to express our needs and feelings to peers, respecting interests, ideas and feelings of peers
