Meet the Faculty

At the heart of Mazel Day School is our exceptional faculty – educators chosen not just for their academic credentials, but for their ability to nurture both minds and souls. From our warm preschool classrooms to our dynamic middle school halls, our teachers create an environment where Jewish values and academic excellence flourish side by side.

Our educators bring diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and teaching styles to our community, yet share a common mission: to help each student discover their unique potential. In our classrooms, curiosity is celebrated, critical thinking thrives, and every child feels seen and supported.

Shabina Saundh

Currently a beloved MDS middle school humanities teacher with over 16 years in education, Mrs. Saundh brings extensive experience in high school administration and school leadership from her time abroad before moving to the United States. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Arts in English Pedagogy from Murray State University. She also holds a Master of Education in Advanced Teaching from the University of the People and a School Management and Leadership Certificate from Harvard Business School Online.

Mark Birnbaum

A valued member of Mazel’s middle school math department, Mr. Birnbaum brings vast experience in high school administration. With nearly two decades of experience in education, he has taught mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science to both middle school and high school students. He holds a Master’s degree in School Building Leadership from Brooklyn College and currently serves as the General Studies Principal at Yeshivat Shaare Torah High School in addition to his role at Mazel.

Rabbi Yaakov Jelen

As a beloved Mazel Middle School Judaic Studies teacher, Rabbi Jelen is deeply committed to building meaningful and impactful relationships with each of his students. In this vein, at MDS High School, we believe that every student can benefit from a rabbi’s support, insight, and guidance during their formative years. In his new role as High School “Student Rabbi,” Rabbi Jelen will provide students with spiritual and religious support as they navigate their teen years, helping them strengthen their personal connection to Torah and Judaism. Additionally, Rabbi Jelen will serve as the Judaic Curriculum Advisor, ensuring that the high school’s Judaic program is both inspiring and rigorous.

Lisa Birnbaum

We are thrilled to welcome Lisa Birnbaum as the head of our new College Guidance Department. Lisa brings over 18 years of expertise in college counseling and education. Since 2006, she has served as the Associate Director of College Counseling at SAR High School in Riverdale, NY, where her dedication and personalized approach have guided countless students and families through the college admissions process. Lisa holds an M.A. in School Counseling from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education (2009) and dual undergraduate degrees from Yeshiva University: a B.S. in Marketing from the Sy Syms School of Business and an A.A. in Judaic Studies from Stern College for Women (2004). Her mentorship and expertise will play a pivotal role in building Mazel High School’s College Guidance Department, supporting students and families as they plan for bright futures post-high school.

Yaffa Ilyaguyev, PreNursery Teacher

Born in Ukraine, in the town of Lugansk, into a family of engineers, Yaffa grew up surrounded by love, play, nature, family gatherings, and friends. She attended Moscow University, where she received a Master’s Degree in Psychology. While completing her degree, she also took specialized training for Jewish educators at the Avi Chai School in experiential and exploratory learning.

Yaffa began her teaching career at Jewish schools in Moscow before emigrating to the United States. In New York, she taught both at a Jewish day school and at “Sunday Shkola,” a special Jewish educational program for Russian-speaking children, before joining the Mazel early childhood team.

From an early age, Yaffa loved pretending to be a teacher. As she grew older, she realized the profound impact she could have on children, guiding them with warmth and positivity. She believes that children are like sponges, absorbing everything around them. Watching their development and cognitive growth unfold is truly fascinating. In Jewish tradition, human beings are often compared to trees—while young, a tree’s branches can be gently guided to grow in the right direction, but once fully grown, change becomes much more difficult. Similarly, she sees childhood as a crucial time for shaping values, character, and learning.

Frumie Drizin, Pre Nursery Teacher

Morah Frumie grew up and attended school in Sydney, Australia. She began her teaching degree in Australia, specializing in early childhood education, and later completed her teacher’s certification at a Teacher’s College in Safed, Israel.

With over eight years of preschool teaching experience, Morah Frumie has also directed day camps, led children’s programs, and taught in Sunday schools – beginning her work with children as a teenager. Now living in Brooklyn, NY, with her six children, ka’h, she brings both expertise and warmth to the classroom. Her deep passion for education and genuine love for children foster a nurturing and engaging learning environment where young learners thrive.

Diana Izkiyayeva, Pre Nursery Teacher

Born in the small town of Guba, Azerbaijan, Diana immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, in 1995 at the age of nine. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Psychology from Brooklyn College and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in General and Special Education at Touro College. With eight years of teaching experience, this is her third year at Mazel Day School. As a mother of four, she deeply understands both the joys and challenges of parenting a two-year-old, which enhances her ability to connect with young learners and their families.

Her passion for teaching began when she became a mother and recognized the importance of early childhood education. She believes that a child’s earliest years lay the foundation for lifelong learning, and she is committed to creating a classroom environment that is fun, engaging, and interactive. She sees every student as both a learner and a teacher, valuing the unique perspectives they bring. Her goal is to help children develop strong communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills while shaping their character and values. She finds joy in watching young minds explore the world around them and takes pride in being part of their developmental journey. Firmly believing that every child has the potential to succeed, she is dedicated to nurturing a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

Leah Khaimov, Nursery Teacher

Morah Leah is a dedicated early childhood educator with over 20 years of experience nurturing young minds. With 12 years of committed service at Mazel Day School, she has built a reputation for forming special bonds with each of her students while also creating meaningful connections with their families. Her passion and devotion are evident in every interaction, as she continually strives to help every child reach their highest potential through a supportive and engaging learning environment.

Morah Leah received early childhood training through the University of Phoenix and is passionate about fostering a love for learning in young children. Her journey into education was shaped by her own experiences as an immigrant, having struggled to enjoy her school years. It wasn’t until she became a mother that she made it her mission to instill a love of learning in her three sons, guiding them in building a strong educational foundation. Being both a full-time mother and Morah deepened her love for teaching, and she found great joy in helping children grow, flourish, and discover their strengths. She thrives on the challenge of bringing out the best in each child in a unique and meaningful way. Seeing their eyes light up with excitement when they learn something new reinforces her dedication to this work.  She is honored to teach Jewish holidays, heritage, and the Hebrew language, instilling a deep love for Judaism in every child. Her vision is to help each child develop strong social-emotional skills, express themselves with confidence, and shine in their own unique way. By creating a structured, balanced, and loving environment, she encourages positive behavior and fosters a classroom where children inspire and uplift one another.

Chava Stern, Nursery Teacher

Born and raised in a small town in Slovakia, Chava Stern discovered her passion for working with children at the age of 18 while working as an au pair in London. This experience sparked a lifelong dedication to early childhood education, leading her to accumulate over six years of classroom teaching experience. Recognizing the importance of formal training, she pursued higher education at Touro College, earning a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and Special Education in January 2014, along with NYS teacher certifications. The following year, she completed an M.S. degree in the same program. This is her 10th year teaching at Mazel Day School.

Chava’s love for teaching was solidified while working in a Jewish preschool in Budapest, Hungary, where she realized that guiding young learners was her true calling. She believes in creating a warm, nurturing environment where children can explore, learn, and reach their full potential. Watching students grow academically, socially, and emotionally brings her immense joy, and she finds deep fulfillment in witnessing their “aha moments” – those magical instances when a child grasps a new concept and their eyes light up with excitement. For her, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the impact of meaningful learning and helping children build a strong foundation for their future.  Chava is a proud mother of two.

In her early years at Mazel, she played a key role in curriculum development alongside the school’s director, Chani Okonov. After several years in preschool education, she transitioned to teaching elementary school, always seeking innovative ways to enhance curricular programs. Additionally, she authored two curriculum books, each selling over 500 copies.

In 2012, Batya moved out of the classroom to become Mazel’s General Studies Curriculum Coordinator, furthering her expertise by taking courses in educational leadership and curriculum development. She continues to explore innovative ways to advance both her education and that of Mazel’s teachers, fostering a school environment that promotes excellence. She currently lives in Crown Heights with her husband and nine children and remains deeply committed to Mazel’s mission and future.

Bracha Yanni, K-8 Judaic/Hebrew Studies Curriculum Coordinator

She began her career working with children with autism at Shema Kolainu in Brooklyn, where she first recognized the profound impact educators can have on their students’ lives. This experience shaped her belief in the power of advocacy and individualized support in education. She went on to teach in general education classrooms across grades K-8, continuously refining her approach to teaching and learning. Bracha earned an MS in Psychology and Education from Touro College and later pursued a second master’s degree in Education from Brooklyn College, becoming a NY State Certified School Building Leader. Dedicated to lifelong learning, she has completed advanced training through the Educational Leadership Advancement Initiative at the Lookstein Center at Bar-Ilan University, the Principal’s Training Initiative through the Consortium of Jewish Education, TEQ training for technology integration, and the Educational Coaching and Mentoring program through Hidden Sparks.

In 2014, Bracha was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award at Bnos Malka Academy in Queens. Her most recent extended study was through the Multi-Sensory Kriah Course, an extensive training on the methodology and techniques in teaching students with dyslexia and other language delays how to read and write Hebrew through Multi-sensory modalities. She is trained in the Tal-Am and Lehavin Ulihaskil Hebrew Language programs as a facilitator in those curricula. Bracha holds true to the ideal that as an educator, we must teach to the needs of our students to help mold the precious souls that are given to us, nurture their learning styles, and value them as individuals.

Most recently, Bracha has taken a leadership role in Jewish education by initiating a network for Jewish curriculum coordinators, leading discussions and panels on the future of curriculum design in Jewish day schools and Yeshivas. Her commitment to advancing Judaic and Hebrew education continues to shape her work at Mazel Day School.  Bracha currently lives in Long Island with her beautiful family and six children.

Gaby Levitis, Director of Student Services

From a young age, Gaby always dreamed of becoming a teacher. Initially, she pursued an education major in college before switching to business. After graduating and starting a family, she felt something was missing and decided to return to school. She earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing management and a master’s degree in childhood education (Grades 1-6) from Long Island University, followed by a second master’s degree in School Building/School District Leadership from Brooklyn College. Over the past fifteen years, Gaby has taught lower elementary grades in both public and private schools. In May 2019, she took on the role of Mazel Day School’s Internal Hidden Sparks Coach, a position she holds with a decade of experience with the Hidden Sparks program. Hidden Sparks focuses on professional development and coaching for Jewish day school educators, deepening understanding of learning and effective approaches for teaching all kinds of learners, particularly those who face challenges.

Six years ago, Gaby transitioned out of the classroom to become the Director of Student Services at Mazel. She wanted to combine her classroom experience with her Hidden Sparks training to ensure that students receive the support they need to thrive. In this role, she also began coaching new teachers and overseeing the Enrichment program, which includes Art, Music, Russian, and Physical Education. This shift has been both challenging and rewarding, as it allows her to work closely with students and families, ensuring they have the resources needed to succeed.

Although Gaby is no longer in the classroom, her passion for working with children remains strong. She is currently enrolled in Prizmah’s You Lead program for Jewish Day School Leaders, continuing her commitment to growth as an educator and leader. Through her work at Mazel, she remains dedicated to supporting both students and educators in their pursuit of excellence.

Devorah Adelist, Kindergarten Teacher

Devorah Adelist was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, and from a young age, she had a passion for working with children. Her journey began by running youth groups, which eventually led to education support roles and ultimately teaching her own class. With over 10 years of experience, Devorah has focused on teaching lower elementary school grades. After spending several years in the classroom, she realized her desire to teach her own class and pursued a Bachelor’s in Education (Elementary) through Curtin University. During her studies, she spent 20 weeks in various schools, exploring innovative and effective teaching methods that further honed her expertise.

Devorah’s educational philosophy centers around the belief that every child has the potential to learn and grow. She embraces the mindset that if a child hasn’t mastered a concept yet, it’s simply a matter of “not yet.” By catering to the diverse learning styles and needs of her students, she ensures each child can reach their full potential.

Devorah loves teaching in Mazel, especially in the lower elementary grades, with a particular passion for teaching Kindergarten. She enjoys making learning fun and creative, utilizing hands-on activities that keep students engaged. She is especially excited to teach Hebrew reading, as it forms the foundation for all future Judaic studies. Bringing the weekly Parsha and Jewish Holidays to life in a practical, exciting way is something Devorah looks forward to, as it empowers children to lead a Jewish life and embrace the customs and mitzvot associated with Judaism. Her goal is to create an inclusive classroom environment where every child feels supported and can thrive.

Jennifer Corre, Kindergarten Teacher

Jennifer is a dedicated and experienced kindergarten teacher with over a decade of experience in shaping the minds of young learners. Dual-certified in Early Childhood Education and Special Education, Jennifer is equipped to meet the diverse needs of her students. She holds a graduate degree in Curriculum Building and Instruction from Bank Street School of Education, providing her with a strong foundation for creating engaging and effective lesson plans.

Before discovering her passion for teaching, Jennifer had a successful career as a certified professional French chef. While cooking remains a love of hers, she ultimately found her true calling in the classroom, where she has the opportunity to inspire a lifelong love of learning in her students. The greatest joy for Jennifer comes from witnessing the ‘aha’ moment when a concept clicks into place for a child.

Outside of teaching, Jennifer enjoys tending to her garden, exploring the wonders of science, building with Legos, and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. She is thrilled to be part of the Mazel school community and looks forward to continuing to nurture the growth and development of her students.

Having faced challenges in her own education, Rivky is passionate about teaching children in a way that is most comfortable and effective for them. She understands that children learn in many ways and uses her creativity to tailor lessons to help them succeed and reach their full potential.

Rivky believes that every child has the ability to learn. Mushky Rutman, Grade 1 Teacher

Mushky was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, in a large family where Jewish education was always a central focus. Now in her 12th year at Mazel, Mushky has 15 years of overall teaching experience. She holds a Master’s degree in Special Education from Mercy College and has worked with children of all age groups, from preschool through middle school.

Mushky became a teacher because of her upbringing in a home that placed great importance on education. As one of 12 children, she learned responsibility early on, and her parents, who were deeply involved in Jewish education, inspired her to follow this path. Her father ran a high school for Russian Jewish immigrants, a Sunday school, and organized weekly Shabbatons. Seeing her parents’ dedication to teaching and kindness towards each person left a lasting impact on her, shaping her desire to positively influence children’s lives through education.

Teaching about Jewish holidays and heritage is especially meaningful to Mushky, as she believes it is her privilege to continue the chain of Jewish traditions passed down from our forefathers. She loves being able to provide the children with the necessary literacy foundations for the Hebrew language and for reading the Torah as well as other Jewish books. With this knowledge, the children will be able to expand their learning of the Torah and Jewish history and connect with their inner core.
